Reasons Why You Get Wrinkles

Reasons Why You Get Wrinkles

06 June

Facial wrinkles are creases, folds, or ridges that appear on the skin of the face. They are a natural consequence of getting older, and are exacerbated by prolonged exposure to water and sun.

Wrinkles on the faces of younger people result from repeated facial expressions. Wrinkles typically appear on the forehead (glabellar lines), around the lips, from the bottom the nose to the mouth, under the eyes, and in the cheeks.

Examples of facial wrinkles include:

  • Crow’s Feet;
  • Forehead wrinkles;
  • Marionette lines;
  • Frown lines;
  • And nasolabial folds.

How do wrinkles form?

Factors that influence when and where people develop wrinkles are sun exposure, smoking, dehydration, certain medications, hormonal imbalances, genetics, and environmental factors.

Of course, the aging of the skin is a natural part of the aging process. As we get older, our skin gets thinner, drier, and less elastic, which leads to wrinkles, creases, and lines on the skin. Facial expressions that are repeated often like smiling, frowning, and laughing also eventually result in lines and wrinkles on the face.

Environmental factors, like sun exposure and air pollution, and habits like as smoking can accelerate the aging of the skin and the development of wrinkles and facial lines.

UV light

According to the Mayo Clinic, ultraviolet radiation, which speeds the natural aging process, is the primary cause of early wrinkling. Exposure to UV light breaks down the skin's connective tissue, collagen, and elastin fibers, which lie in the deeper layer of the skin (the dermis).

Without the supportive connective tissue, the skin loses strength and flexibility. Skin then begins to sag and wrinkle prematurely. Because of this, the first wrinkles often appear in places that are most exposed to the sun, like the nose, cheeks and forehead.

Years of repetitive expressions, like smiling or frowning, can reduce skin's elasticity and gradually form permanent lines. These expression lines are called frown lines when they're on your forehead, crow's feet when they're around your eyes, and marionette lines when they're run down from the corners of the mouth.

Every time you frown, laugh, or squint, you reinforce the gradual formation of groves beneath the skin. When you are young, the skin has enough elasticity to spring back into place. However, as we get older, the skin loses its elasticity and the groves become permanent, forming wrinkles.

If there is a good reason not to start smoking, it’s to keep your skin looking young. Smoking accelerates the aging process of skin, because of the reduced blood supply to the dermis. An alcohol habit is also not beneficial for the youthful appearance of your skin, as alcohol dehydrates the skin and dry skin wrinkles faster.

Can I get rid of facial rhytids?

There are a number of ways to treat facial rhytids (a wrinkle in the skin). Dermal fillers are an example of a common treatment. These non-surgical cosmetic treatments entail the injection of soft tissue filler into the skin to help smooth out facial wrinkles.

There are several types of dermal fillers. A common type is comprised of hyaluronic acid, which can be applied to improve the skin's contouring and reduce indentations like scars, wrinkles, or lines.  The American Society of Plastic Surgeons explains that hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the body. High concentrations are found in soft connective tissues and in the fluid surrounding the eyes. It's also in some cartilage and joint fluids, as well as skin tissue. Hyaluronic acid forms the basis of many fillers, like Juvederm, Belotero, and Restylane. These fillers are formulated to help fill out the wrinkles or lines and make the skin appear plumper, adding youth back into aging skin.

Another option is the injection of botulinum toxin, commonly known as Botox. Botulinum toxin injections are the most frequently performed cosmetic procedure for the treatment of facial wrinkles. In this procedure, small, diluted amounts of the toxin are directly injected into specific facial muscles. This causes controlled weakening of the muscles, forcing wrinkles to relax and soften.

Botox and dermal fillers are injected with a fine needle into specific muscles with only minor discomfort. With most dermal fillers, the results are immediately visible, but Botox takes 3–7 days to take full effect.

Getting older and getting wrinkles are part of being human. Fortunately, medical technology has developed: now, dermal fillers and Botox treatments can help you keep yourself looking younger for longer.
