Treating Stubborn Nasolabial Folds

Why are Nasolabial Folds so Hard to Get Rid of?

Treating Stubborn Nasolabial Folds

Nasolabial folds are natural indentation lines that extend from the edges of the nose to either side of the mouth. They appear more prominent while smiling, giving them the alternative titles of smile or laugh lines. Unfortunately, these folds naturally deepen with age, creating stubborn wrinkles and creases.

These folds are made of dense fibrous tissues and muscles fibers. As the cheeks lose fat during the natural aging process, the soft-tissue volume of the dermis becomes less elastic. Unable to hold itself upwards, the skin sags downwards, leading to more apparent and permanent nasolabial folds. Overall, this contributes to a more aged appearance.

The normal aging process causes the nasolabial folds to be more prominent with time. The age-related decrease of important skin components, such as collagen and elastin, causes the dermis to become more delicate and lose elasticity. Additionally, exposure to the sun, ultraviolet (UV) rays, environmental pollutants, smoking, drinking alcohol, excessive fluctuations in weight, and lack of hydration may also contribute to the aging process.

Treating nasolabial folds with dermal fillers

Dermal fillers have become a common cosmetic procedure for treating nasolabial folds. This minimal and non-invasive method helps to restore volume, hydration, and vitality to the skin. Clinical studies and post-marketing reports have shown that dermal fillers, especially hyaluronic acid-based ones, produce significant improvement in the nasolabial folds, making them less noticeable.

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body that helps to retain water molecules in the skin’s extracellular matrix. It also signals fibroblasts in the dermis to produce more collagen, helping to maintain the skin’s resilience and plumpness. The aging process inevitably causes the reduction of this compound within the skin, making it more susceptible to harsh external injury and the formation of wrinkles. However, the addition of new hyaluronic acid into the skin can help it to regain its integrity.

Dermal fillers are intradermally injected into the nasolabial fold area or the upper cheek area to add volume. This lifts the cheeks, smooths out the fine lines and other dermal indentations, and restores the moisture in the skin. Some brands that are effective in correcting nasolabial folds are:

  • Restylane Lyft;
  • Juvederm Ultra 2;
  • Sculptra;
  • And Pluryal.

When will patients need to come back for treatment?

Unlike surgery or other invasive treatments, dermal filler injections provide a lot of convenience and comfort to both doctors and patients. The procedure may take up to 30 minutes or more, depending on the condition of the patient. The solution should be delivered to the mid-dermis layer of the skin. Not only will this treatment correct the nasolabial folds: it will provide overall rejuvenation of the skin.

By following the appropriate aseptic guidelines and injection techniques, the positive and natural-looking results of this treatment can last to 6 months or more, depending on the product used. There is also no marked downtime after this treatment, which allows the patient to return to their daily life as soon as possible. Repeated treatments are also permissible in order to maintain desired effects.

Side effects such as redness, swelling, mild bruising, tenderness, and irritation may occur at the treatment site. These are common and should resolve within 48 hours to 1 week.  However, if these side effects do not subside after 2 weeks, medical attention should be sought immediately.
