Why Add Azzalure To Your Cosmetic Treatments

Azzalure has been created by Galderma with the main purpose of it being used for aesthetic procedures. Similar to the popular products Botox and Dysport, Azzalure also contains Botulinum toxin type A. However its formula and composition has been created with the main intention to be used in a cosmetic setting. Galderma is one of the leading manufacturers of Cosmetic products, so when you choose to add Azzalure as an option for your patients, you are choosing to add a product from a world class manufacturer.

Azzalure has been shown to be highly successful in the treatment of severe glabellar lines, or as many refer to them, "frown lines". The product has also been used by various professionals to treat crow's feet lines. Crow's feet lines are a common psychological concern among both men and women. You can help your patients regain their confidence by offering a leading product to them and also save on the involved cost of supplies for treatment. Since Azzalure entered the marketed after Botox and Dysport, you can expect lower prices.

Azzalure prices are generally lower than Botox, Xeomin and Dysport but this is not to say it is of a lesser quality. It is simply a matter of brand recognition at most. There is substantial medical evidence to support the safe use of Azzalure and the great results it produces.

Information About Azzalure For Healthcare Professionals

What is Azzalure

Azzalure is a local muscle relaxing injectable formulated and manufactured by Ipsen, a French pharmaceutical company, and is marketed by Galderma. Each vial is supplied with 125 Speywood units of Clostridium botulinum toxin A hemagglutinin complex. Speywood units are only specific to Azzalure and are not interchangeable with other preparations of botulinum toxin. The toxin appears as a white powder that is extensively sterilized before it is supplied in a type 1 glass vial and sealed with an aluminum seal. This botulinum toxin powder must be reconstituted with sodium chloride 9mg/ml (0.9 %) solution before it is injected into areas of concerns.

What areas can be treated using Azzalure?

This neuromodulator is specially formulated and indicated for adult patients with moderate to severe wrinkles.

  • Glabellar lines: These are the vertical creases that appear between the eyebrows when someone frowns.
  • Lateral canthal lines: These wrinkles, also known as crow’s feet, extends from the outer corner of the eyes.

Suitable candidates

This toxin is best used on adult patients who are aged 65 years or younger.

Use instructions

Prior to correcting aesthetic imperfections, always examine medical information (e.g. underlying ailments, medications and supplements taken, etc.) and pervious history of cosmetic procedures to ensure that the patient is suitable for this treatment. Patients who are hypersensitive to any of the ingredients of the neurotoxin powder (e.g. Clostridium botulinum toxin type A, human albumin or lactose monohydrate), presenting infections at the proposed sites of injection, or who have existing diseases like Eaton Lambert Syndrome, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and myasthenia gravis are contraindicated from receiving Azzalure injections.

Once they are deemed ready, you can commence the procedure by reconstituting the vial of botulinum toxin powder with (0.9%) sodium chloride solution for injection.

Before injecting the solution, remove any makeup and sanitize the skin with a local antiseptic. Use a sterile 29 to 30G needle to gently inject the neurotoxin into the affected areas intramuscularly. The recommended units of toxin vary according to the different indications:

  • Glabellar lines: Divide 50 Speywood units (0.25ml of the reconstituted solution) into 5 doses and inject 2 of them intramuscularly into each corrugator muscle and 1 into the procerus muscle near the nasofrontal angle.
  • Lateral canthal lines: The recommended dose is 30 Speywood units (0.15ml of the reconstituted solution) in each side. Inject the neurotoxin solution at the external part of the orbicularis oculi muscle away from the orbital rim. Ensure that the injections are very superficial and lateral (20° to 30° angle) to the skin.

Following adequate correction, deactivate any unused reconstituted solution (in the vial or in the syringe) using 2ml of dilute sodium hypochlorite solution at 0.55% or 1% (Dakin's solution).

How does it work?

Azzalure is composed of 125 Speywood units of Clostridium botulinum toxin A. Once injected, the toxin acts at the nerve-muscle junction that is located between the nerve and the muscle fiber to inhibit the transport of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Hence, the injected muscles are then temporarily weakened resulting in halted muscle contractions and wrinkles are smoothed out. Once the effects of the toxin wears off, the muscles regain its activity and these wrinkles will reappear.

When should my patient come back for treatment?

Clinical studies found that the cosmetic corrections done on the glabellar lines can last for up to 4 months. Some patients even noticed improvements 5 months after the treatment session. Nevertheless, ensure that the interval between injections is a minimum of 3 months, so as to reduce the risk of undesirable reactions.

Reported side effects

Following the treatment session, patients may experience some commonly reported side effects.

  • Localized injection site reactions (e.g. redness, irritation, pain, stinging sensation, swelling, bruising, etc.)
  • Increased lacrimation or dry eyes
  • Swollen eyelids
  • Drooping eyelids
  • Headache
  • Allergic reactions, rare

These may not be all of the possible side effects. Refer to the package insert for other potential reactions.

Patients usually notice improvements to their aesthetic concerns approximately 2 to 3 days after the procedure and maximum effects should be visible within the first month after treatment.

Cost of treatment

The cost depends on the amount of injections done on the different facial areas. You can determine this cost based on how many units are used.
