Frequently Asked Questions About Bocouture
What is Bocouture®?
Bocouture, also known as Xeomin® in the UK, is a well-known botulinum toxin A medication licensed for aesthetic procedures. While Xeomin is indicated for conditions such as cervical dystonia and blepharospasm, Bocouture is indicated for the treatment of vertical frown lines. As the body ages, the continuous muscle activity will form stubborn, pronounced lines and folds on the face. Using the neurotoxin botulinum toxin A, this injectable solution reduces the muscle tension by blocking the transmission of cholinergic reaction.
As a result, it relaxes the muscles and temporarily improves the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows. This relaxation contributes to the restoration of smooth and firm skin, removing any visible lines. With 50 units per vial of this neurotoxin, the preparation and dilution of the solution allows for more precise, safe, and effective administration of the solution.
Ideal Candidate
Patients aged 65 and below who are looking to temporarily fix the prominent wrinkles on their forehead are good candidates for this treatment. These wrinkles appear on the skin due to repeated muscle contractions over the years.
It is not recommended as a treatment for those who exhibit hypersensitive reactions to botulinum toxin A or those diagnosed with severe muscle disorders such as myasthenia gravis or Lambert Eaton Syndrome.
Treatment areas
Bocouture is indicated for the correction of vertical lines between the brows. Doctors also use this to treat crow’s feet by injecting the solution into 3 injection points on each side of the muscles located on the outer side of the eye. It temporarily reduces the activity of the orbicularis oculi and eliminates the visibility of the lines. Specialists also use this for forehead wrinkles; cervical dystonia, which is a severe condition which deters the movement of the neck from twisting and turning smoothly; and blepharospasm, which is an abnormal contraction of the eyelids.
How does Bocouture work?
Manufactured by Merz Aesthetics, this product uses purified onabotulinumtoxinA, a potent neurotoxin without any complexing proteins. It temporarily halts cholinergic reactions by binding to the active site of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, and blocks the delivery of a chemical signal for muscle contractions. As a result, the muscle does not tense and contract, but relaxes on its own. Due to the lack of complexing proteins, the effects can last longer with a reduced risk of antibody neutralization.
Afterwards, the skin’s surface stretches to eradicate any noticeable lines and folds at the affected area, becoming firmer and tauter. This creates a smoothing effect, thus reducing any imperfections on the face while maintaining the face's natural expressiveness.
