Frequently Asked Questions about Dysport®
What is Dysport?
Dysport is a sterile, single-use vial botulinum toxin A medication that acts on both cosmetic-based and severe medical muscle-related conditions. It utilizes the neuromuscular blocking toxin, botulinum toxin A, to block the transmission of acetylcholine—ultimately reducing muscle contractions. The innovative formulation of Dysport creates a molecular structure with a lower protein weight, which allows a rapid absorption of the solution into the body. Manufactured by the French company Ipsen, the brand is widely used and licensed in almost 67 countries, including the European market, and has received approval from the FDA. It is cost effective and offers 300 units or 500 units of lyophilized botulinum toxin A, human serum albumin (125 mg) and lactose (2.5mg).
What makes a good candidate?
It is suitable for patients below the age of 65 who wish to reduce wrinkles and ease sporadic muscle movements. This medication can temporarily fix localized moderate to severe wrinkles on the forehead, also known as glabellar lines.
Some doctors use this produce for patients who are experiencing hyperhidrosis, or eye muscle conditions such as blepharospasm. Dysport is indicated for cervical dystonia, upper limb spasticity in adults, and lower limb spasticity in children and adults.
However, it is not recommended for patients with a known allergy to the ingredients including cow's milk, or patients with an infection on the intended treatment area.
Areas treated with Dysport
Due to its formulation, Dysport can be administered using fewer injection points.
- Glabellar lines – The constant activity of the procerus and corrugator muscles above the eyebrows and in the forehead will create moderate to severe wrinkles. Inject Dysport to relax the muscles in order to smooth out these lines.
- Upper limb spasticity – Administer this treatment to decrease the severity of muscle constrictions and to develop temporary control of the muscles.
- Cervical dystonia – Relieve the painful condition of involuntary neck muscle contractions by using Dysport as an intramuscular injection.
- Lower limb spasticity in children and adults – For children aged 2 and above and adults who are diagnosed with cerebral palsy, Dysport can reduce lower limb contractions using an intramuscular injection.
- Some doctors use Dysport to temporarily resolve hyperhydrosis or underarms excessive sweating.
How does Dysport work?
Botulinum toxin A is a neurotoxin that is retrieved from Clostridium botulinum type A, Hall Strain, using an innovative and extensive purification process. As a powerful neurotoxin, it binds and inhibits the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which blocks the signaling of muscle contractions. This action leads to muscle relaxation.
As for muscle disorders, this acts as a temporary stabilizer and reduces any erratic muscle spasms and immobilization such as cervical dystonia and limb spasticity.
Details of the treatment
Dysport offers 300-unit or 500-unit vials. Each treatment is measured according to units and should be used for 1 patient.
For preparation, the power is reconstituted using preservative-free 0.9% sodium chloride injection, USP, to achieve the desired concentration and dilution, such as 10 units/0.1mL. Refer to the product manual for more instructions.
Formulation and dosage may vary according to area of treatment and condition. For glabellar lines, identify the deep furrowed vertical lines on the forehead caused by the tense lateral corrugator and procerus muscles. After identifying the target muscle, administer 5 injections of 10 units each, slowly and gently using an intramuscular technique. This will allow the muscle to relax and stretch the skin taut. The technique and dosage is also designed to maintain the patient's ability to express their natural facial movements.
Other muscular conditions that are more severe may require a larger quantity of toxins. For example, cervical dystonia may require 250 to 500 units intramuscularly, with re-treatment every 12 weeks. As for other medical conditions, refer to the product manual for dosing instructions.
How long does Dysport last?
The effects can be seen within 24 to 48 hours. The duration of these effects may last up to 3 months, depending on the location of the treatment and the dosage used. Those who wish to maintain the benefits may receive a follow-up treatment after 12 weeks.
Safety information
The formulation of Dysport and its potency is appropriate to the preparation, dosage, and administration method designed by the manufacturer. It is not interchangeable with other botulinum toxin products.
Although it offers medical relief for certain conditions, there is a risk of adverse reactions if not administered accurately. These reactions may include muscle weakness and pain in other areas, difficulty breathing and swallowing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, blurred vision or drooping eyelids, and loss of bladder control.
General side effects, which may develop due to the injection technique or from the solution itself, may include nausea, headache or dizziness, hypersensitivity such as hives, sore throat, or fever.
How long does it take a client to recover from treatment?
Clinically proven to have minimal downtime after the treatment. Clients can return to their daily schedule immediately.
Cost of treatment
Dysport can be priced according to the area of treatment or the number of units being used. The average cost is around $425.
