    What Are IUDs Used For?

Before you decide to shop for an IUD online, research all you need to know to be able to offer these types of contraceptive solutions.

IUDs, short for an intrauterine device, are one of the best low-maintenance contraceptive methods. Once inserted into the uterus, IUDs offer continuous birth control lasting from 3 to 10 years, depending on the type and the brand, and have 99% efficiency in preventing pregnancies.

Created at the beginning of the 20th century and popularized in the 1960s, IUDs are advancing in their effectiveness, longevity, and design as we speak.

    Types of IUDs

Before you shop for an IUD online, make sure you know what to expect from each type of these gynecology products, equipment, or instruments.

There are two types of IUDs available for patients: copper and hormonal ones, with each of them being available under several brand names. The effectiveness of both these types is over 99%, and they are safe to have, with a low complication rate of only 1 in 1000 women experiencing any. The differences between the IUD types depend on the material they are made of and how they work.

Copper-coated IUDs, like SMB® TCu 380A with Safeload or  T-SAFE® CU 380A QL IUD, work immediately, as copper is naturally a spermicide, and it makes it difficult for eventual fertilized eggs to plant themselves in the uterus. Copper IUDs can also be kept for longer, from five to ten years, but it can affect the menstrual flow by making it more heavy and painful.

Hormonal IUDs, like the one created by MIRENA® or JAYDESS®, are made of plastic, and they release progestin levonorgestrel, which can stop ovulation and thicken cervical mucus so it’s difficult for sperm to reach and fertilize eggs. Unlike copper, hormonal IUDs need a few days before the full effect of the hormonal protection is reached and they need to be replaced sooner, lasting from 3 to 6 years, depending on the brand. These types of IUDs can help reduce menstrual flow, making it a good option for patients who are looking to ease their cycle.

    IUD Administration Technique

Always ensure that the administration of IUD is performed by an experienced healthcare professional, who will follow the standard medical protocol for this type of procedure, as well as manufacturer recommendations, no matter if you order IUDs online from a distributor, or if you source them directly from the seller.

The IUU insertion should take place in the first week of the start of the patient’s menstrual cycle after the six-week mark post-baby delivery or immediately after the first-trimester termination of pregnancies. The procedure lasts only a few minutes, including the initial examination which should focus on checking the exact position of the womb. The patient may receive a local anesthetic cream for the administration to be as comfortable as possible. Then, the doctor should insert a speculum, and place the IUD inside the womb with an inserter tube.

Do note that your patient will need to come in for a check-up at four and twelve weeks past the insertion date and that they should continue in their cycle of regular gynecological examination.

    IUD Side Effects

During your initial consultation with the patient interested in having an IUD placed, ensure that your client is fully aware of IUD effects and the possible side effects that may occur once it’s administered.

Some of the possible side effects of an IUD include:

    • Cramping or period-like pain
    • Irregular bleeding
    • Change in menstrual flow
    • Allergies
    • Infection

In rare cases where the IUD is not well placed or fails to work, the patient can experience an ectopic pregnancy. Because of all the above mentioned, the procedure of IUD fitting should be administered by skilled medical professionals only, using genuine products from renowned sellers, which will ensure the quality and safety of each procedure.

Also, make it your business priority to nurture open communication with your clients. They should be able to contact you if they experience any inconvenience.

    IUD Alternatives

As an alternative to an IUD, you can suggest your client try a birth control implant like the one made by the brand NEXPLANON®. It’s a soft plastic stick that releases progestogen slowly, lasts up to 3 years, reduces menstrual bleeding to a minimum, and can help improve skin acne.

Another option is for your client to try contraceptive injections like

DEPO-PROVERA®, where a progesterone-like hormone is injected, helping prevent pregnancies. This is a great alternative for those clients who now don’t feel like having an implant in them, but it does need a maintenance protocol of one injection every three months.

Do note that neither IUD nor other contraceptive methods protect against sexually transmitted diseases. Advise your clients to keep using condoms during sexual intercourse, and to undergo an HPV vaccination with GARDASIL® if they are under the age of 45, as it will protect them against 9 HPV viruses.
