PRP therapy is rapidly gaining popularity as a facial rejuvenation treatment. In essence, PRP kits are commercial kits that supply the healthcare practitioner intending to provide PRP therapy with all the necessary items for harvesting PRP. PRP Kits offer reliable yields while keeping the PRP extraction protocol simple and rapid for quick processing.

PRP Kits can be divided into two groups based on the method of extraction used:

Buffy coat based: Centrifugation of whole blood separates the different blood components into several layers. The “buffy coat” layer is a thin film-like portion located between the blood and platelet serum where the platelets reside. Buffy coat-based kits are designed to extract and isolate the buffy coat while minimizing contamination with red blood cells. Some kits accomplish this by incorporating a second centrifugation step to further separate the platelets.

Gel separators: In this type of kit, blood is collected in special vacutainer tubes that contain a separating gel. These gels are inert thixotropic materials with a density between the densities of blood and platelets. When the tube is centrifuged to segregate the blood components, the gel forms a physical partition, separating the platelet-containing plasma from the erythrocytes and leukocytes. Additionally, a blood anticoagulant is also added to prevent the blood sample from clotting.

PRP is a concentrate of platelets with associated cytokines and growth factors that is valued as a treatment that promotes the regeneration of aged or injured tissue. Its potential for accelerating wound healing has seen its use in a variety of medical fields such as trauma, sports medicine and dermatology. PRP is indicated for bone healing, soft tissue repair, and cosmetic rejuvenation, among others. For PRP to be considered therapeutic, that is, to have a clinical effect when administered, the platelet count contained in the generated PRP should be at one million platelets per µl of plasma.

PRP Kits are favoured over non-kit methods as the PRP obtained are usually of higher quality both in purity, as kits enable the complete separation of other blood components, and yield, as commercial kits typically produce PRP with higher platelet counts than conventional methods. The process by which PRP is generated using the commercial kit varies, but the protocol typically follows three stages:

Whole blood is collected from the patient. The volume required depends on the kit, but usually around 10ml is of sufficient volume. Sampling is performed through venipuncture using a butterfly needle.

Phase Two. The blood sample is centrifuged to segregate the individual blood elements into distinct layers, including a portion containing platelets. This PRP layer is extracted and transferred to a syringe, ready to be administered to the patient.

Phase Three: The generated PRP is then injected into the planned treatment site. Administration can be performed in many ways, depending on the indication. If PRP is used as mesotherapy, the material is administered as microinjections across the treatment area using a 32G needle. When using PRP as a wrinkle filler, PRP may be administrated superficially into the dermis using a 30G needle utilizing injection techniques such as cross-hatching, linear threading, or fan

PRP therapy is generally regarded as very safe due to the autologous nature of the material used for treatment. Side effects are minimal, any reactions that may occur are usually mild in severity and should resolve on their own within a few days. These common side effects include swelling, redness, and tenderness at the site of injection.

After PRP treatment, the patient should refrain from touching or manipulating the treatment area (e.g. massage) unnecessarily, and to abstain from activities that may increase the risk of bruising such as alcohol intake, taking certain herbal supplements (e.g., St. John’s Wart, Garlic, Red Yeast Extract), green tea, vitamin E, fish oil, ginseng, and anti-inflammatory medications like aspirin.

At Medical Spa RX, we stock the Plasmolifting brand of PRP Kits and instruments. This brand generates PRP using the Plasmolifiting protocol. The consumables and instruments involved in performing the Plasmolifting protocol include:

PRP Kit: The Plasmolifting PRP Gel kits provide 10 tubes of 9ml Plasmolifting blood vacutainer tubes. These tubes contain a proprietary separating gel and an anti-clotting agent.

Plasmolifting PRP Centrifuge: The Plasmolifting protocol makes use of Plasmolifting-certified centrifuges to enable the separating step that produces PRP. Two models are currently available: the XC 2000 and the XC 2415.

Plasmolifting Incubator: A dry bath incubator is required for processing PRP samples to produce PRP gel. PRP gel is a more viscous form of PRP and can be used for soft tissue augmentation. The Plasmolifting Incubator Mini B 100 is a small lightweight instrument with built-in safety features such as an automatic thermal cutoff and a fault detection alarm.
