    Desirial® Fillers in a nutshell

Desirial products are dermal fillers made of cross-linked hyaluronic acid that are used in the treatment of female vulvovaginal medical conditions, such as vaginal atrophy. The product is a gel consisting of the active ingredient hyaluronic acid as well as mannitol, an antioxidant that functions to protect and preserve the hydrating and volume-providing qualities of hyaluronic acid for longer.

    Desirial and Desirial Plus

The Desirial range comes in the form of two products: Desirial, indicated for the treatment of vulvovaginal atrophy symptoms, and Desirial Plus, which is designed for the reshaping of the labia in the case of moderate to severe hypotrophy (reduction in volume and elasticity). Treatment with Desirial products involves injections only, hence they are great alternatives to a surgical labiaplasty.

How do you know who is a good candidate for treatment with Desirial?

Desirial products are indicated especially for women who are facing menopause, for whom vaginal atrophy is a common issue. However, any perimenopausal, menopausal, or child-bearing aged woman who displays symptoms of vulvovaginal cutaneous/mucosal atrophy such as dehydration, dryness, irritation e.g. itching and discomfort, or dyspareunia (painful intercourse) will stand to gain from Desirial dermal fillers.
Desirial products are contraindicated in pregnant or breastfeeding mothers; in areas with signs of clinical inflammation and/or viral, bacterial, fungal infections, and/or patients being treated for these pathologies; and in patients who are hypersensitive or allergic to hyaluronic acid based products or mannitol.

    Target Areas Treated With Desirial

    ● Labia majora – Over time, some women may observe a decrease of volume in their labia majora, leading to a somewhat lax and deflated appearance. This cosmetic concern can be addressed with Desirial, which will aid in rejuvenating and rehydrating the area, improving symmetry and reduce dryness.
    ● Vaginal mucosa – Treatment to this area is effective in ameliorating vaginal dryness and its associated symptoms such as irritation, persistent discomfort, itching, and painful sexual intercourse.
    ● Vestibule – As in the vaginal mucosa, injection into this area will improved rehydration and relieve symptoms associated with vaginal atrophy. Treatment to this area should only be conducted by a trained expert.

How does Desirial help with Vaginal Atrophy?

Desirial fillers aim to treat these problems by harnessing the hydrophilic (water-loving) properties of hyaluronic acid, an essential component found in skin tissue. When injected into the skin, Desirial acts as a water reservoir, which helps improve tissue hydration. In addition, Desirial acts to physically plump up the underlying tissue by ‘filling’ up the space under the skin, reshaping the labia. This act of filling also provides mechanical pressure to the epithelial cells which in turn promote the activity of fibroblasts, increasing collagen production. These actions result in restoration in the elasticity and volume of the vaginal dermal tissue and an improvement in vaginal atrophy.

    About Vaginal atrophy

Menopause in women brings about changes to the vaginal area, both aesthetically and physiologically. The hormonal shift triggered by decreasing ovarian and adrenal function impacts fibroblast activity (a main component in collagen synthesis) and reduces elastin production rate, both of which lead to labia majora hypotrophy. At the same time, decreased estrogen levels reduces trophic stimulation in vaginal tissues, leading to the vaginal epithelium becoming thin and friable, a decrease in lubrication and blood flow, an increase in vaginal pH, and an overall loss in vaginal elasticity. These changes all contribute to the manifestation of vaginal atrophy, a widespread condition among perimenopausal and menopausal women.

    How to use

Administration of Desirial products should be performed by a trained member of the medical profession. As the hyaluronic acid in Desirial is non-animal derived, allergies of the skin don’t necessarily need to be tested before the procedure. The entire procedure doesn’t take more than 20 minutes. In some cases, it is recommended to administer a topical or local-regional anesthetic to numb the area before the injection.

How long do the effects of Desirial last?

The duration of effect depends on a few factors such as the quantity injected, as well as patient metabolism; however, treatment consisting of a single injection will typically last for at least 6 months to 1 year.

    Helpful Safety Information

Desirial products are CE marked medical devices specifically for gynecological indications, and comply with all relevant safety and legal requirements (e.g. biocompatibility, tolerance).

Desirial products, like all other dermal fillers, are generally regarded as safe treatments to undergo; however, some side effects have been reported.

    ● Temporary erythema (redness)
    ● Swelling
    ● Pain
    ● Itching
    ● Discoloration
    ● Tenderness

Any adverse effect that persists for longer than a week should be notified to the physician as soon as possible.

What is the expected Recovery Time for your patients?

Patients can expect minimal recovery time from this treatment, a period that usually lasts about 10 days. During the recovery period, patients should avoid pools, saunas, and sports such as cycling for the first week, sexual intercourse for the first 5 days, and alcohol in the first 24 hours after treatment.

What is the average cost of Desirial treatments?

The cost of a Desirial treatment may vary depending on the area being treated. The average cost is around $1,000.
