Emla is used medically by doctors and nurses to prevent pain and discomfort during minor medical procedures. Emla can be applied to the penis in order to provide numbing effects before medical procedures like wart removal, or before injections in this sensitive area. Some men have also found that applying Emla on the penis prior to sexual intercourse or other sexual activities may delay ejaculation.

Emla is a topical anesthetic cream that is able to temporarily numb the surface of the skin. Emla cream contains two active ingredients: lidocaine and prilocaine, which are both local anesthetics. Once applied to the skin, the patient is less likely to feel pain or discomfort, though will retain feelings of touch and pressure on the area where the cream was applied. It is typically used before certain medical procedures such as those requiring a needle or injection, or minor skin operations such as the removal of leg ulcers or warts. It can be used on delicate areas such as the genitals, both the skin of the penis and the vulva.

Emla as a treatment for premature ejaculation

Premature ejaculation, which involves orgasm and ejaculation before the desired moment, is a common issue among men. Many men find this to be a source of dissatisfaction and oftentimes embarrassment when it comes to their sex life and sexual relationship. While many men have used Emla cream to last longer during sexual intercourse, researchers have also looked into Emla as a treatment for premature ejaculation. One study split participants into four groups, with one group applying Emla 20 minutes before sexual contact, the second group applying it 30 minutes before contact, the third group applying Emla on penis 45 minutes before contact, and the fourth group applying a placebo. All participants covered the penis with a condom prior to sexual contact. In the first group, the pre-ejaculation period increased to 6.71 minutes (+/- 2.54 minutes), and though the pre-ejaculation period increased to 8.70 minutes (+/-1.70 minutes) for participants in the second group. There was no change in pre-ejaculation period for the fourth group. With these results, the study found that using Emla for premature ejaculation can be effective, with the optimal application time being 20 minutes before sexual contact.

Who is Emla suitable for?

Emla on the penis is suitable for adults who experience premature ejaculation. By numbing the area and making the penis and glans less sensitive, men who have applied Emla are able to more easily delay ejaculation. It is not suitable for application on the skin of the genitals for children under the age of 12, or in adults who are allergic to lidocaine or prilocaine, or have had allergic reaction to other similar local anesthetics. When used to treat premature ejaculation, Emla should be applied thinly to the head of the penis.

Can I use Emla for premature ejaculation?

As with all medications and anesthetics, there are some precautions that should be observed to decrease the likelihood of complications and side effects.

  • Precautions

There are some considerations that should be observed before using Emla on penis. Emla cream should not be used by men who:

  • Have a disorder called methemoglobinemia, which affects blood pigment levels;
  • Have a rare inherited blood deficiency called glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase;
  • Take certain medications for heart rhythm disorders, such as amiodarone;
  • Have a skin condition called atopic dermatitis.

An additional note to this: Emla cream should never be applied to an area of skin if there is a rash, cut, graze, or if there are other open wounds present. Contact of this solution with the eyes should be avoided, with thorough hand-washing after application.
